Here is a fun history with sugar. The English name for sugar comes from Latin succaram from Persian Shakar that in turn comes from the Sanskrit word Shakara. why? Because sugar as a stand-alone product was first invented in India.
2 Millennia later we got a new type of sugar that was bleached to remove key minerals and give it the white color. This was termed Chinese as that method was perfected in China. It was cheaper and looked better (even if less healthier) and thus became a big hit in the market.
Thus, In almost all Indian languages, Chini means white sugar and shakara means traditional sugar (brown).
